Modern Psychoanalytic Groups: An Introduction.
Presenter: Jane Snyder, Ph.D., Cert. Psya.
Welcome! The morning session will begin with an experiential group process using Modern Psychoanalytic technique, followed by a discussion of our observations and understanding of group dynamics.
Evening Activity: Oysters and Appetizers hosted by Dr. Snyder
Objectives
The participants will be able to:
· Discuss the major objective of group psychoanalysis.
· Compare and contrast modern psychoanalytic group work with another school of thought.
· Discuss two techniques that are used in modern psychoanalytic group work that have been studied and tested in modern group work.
Wednesday, July 31
Challenges of a Real-World Group: Transference, Resistance and Emotional Growth in an Amateur Band
Session A
Presenter: Eugene Goldwater, M.D., Cert. Psya.
Dr. Goldwater will describe how psychoanalytic training made it possible for him to maintain a performing dance band for more than 25 years.
Session B: Real World Groups: Personal and Professional
Presenters: Patricia Hugenberger, Cert. Psya., Psya.D., & Lorette Dussault, Cert. Psya., Psya.D.
This second half of the day will facilitate further discussion about individuals’ experiences in various groups, including one’s initial exposure to groups through our family of origin. Participants who have led groups in the community or in mental health settings are encouraged to share their experience and knowledge of group work.
Objectives
The participant will be able to:
· Discuss the concepts of transference and resistance as they pertain to a real-word group.
· Discuss how emotional growth is measured in real-world groups.
· Discuss how the concepts of transferece, resistance and emotional growth can be applied to and measured in groups in mental health settings.
Thursday, August 1
Leadership and Authority: A Splash of Group Relations
Presenter: Tyler Bean, CPA, CFE
Mr. Bean is the Board Treasurer for the Center for the Study of Groups and Social Systems (CSGSS) and a Consultant Candidate and Associate, at the A.K Rice Institute. He was a recent consultant to the CSGSS conference held at BGSP. Mr. Bean will facilitate experiential study group sessions in the Tavistock tradition and will lead a discussion regarding the experience to assist participants’ learning of unconscious and conscious dynamics and authority relations that impact the emotional and working lives of groups.
Objectives
The participant will be able to:
· Discuss what is meant be the Tavistock approach to group relations.
· Discuss the conscious and unconscious dynamics that are manifested in the real-group experience.
· Discuss how authority relations affect the group dynamic.
Friday, August 2
Modern Psychoanalytic Groups: Endings
Presenter: Lynn Perlman, Ph.D, Cert. Psya.
The week will conclude with a group process during the first half of the session followed by a discussion that helps us synthesize the learning experience throughout the week..
Objectives
The participant will be able to:
· Discuss what is meant by group endings.
· Compare and contrast the modern psychoanalytic approach to group endings with other approaches.
· Discuss how the learning in the group takes place and how this may be applied to other professional and personal groups.
Fee: $35.00 per day. $120.00 for the week
